A SHORTLIST of proposed projects which could help to transform Barrow for future generations is announced today.
Fourteen schemes which seek to improve different areas of the town were launched through the #BrilliantBarrow #MyTown initiative last month.
Following feedback from the public, seven have now been chosen for further development as part of a bid for £25 million of funding from the government.
Steve Cole is the Chief Infrastructure Officer at BAE Systems Submarine Solutions and is also chairperson of the Town Deal Board which has been set up to spearhead Barrow’s bid for the funding.
He said: “We have taken an important step forward in the Town Deal process. Having listened to the feedback from members of the public we have agreed on a shortlist of projects which we will now further develop to see how they might form a part of our final submission to government.
“Your voices have been heard through the #BrilliantBarrow website and social media channels. Everyone’s views were crucial in the shortlisting process – and I would like you all as residents and business owners of the town to once again help us shape our Town Deal plans.
“We will soon be sharing our further thoughts on the shortlisted projects and need as many people as possible to have their say.
“These are exciting times for Barrow as we plan for a very bright future.”
Barrow is one of 101 towns selected to bid for £25 million in government cash as part of the Town Deal initiative and must make its case to the government soon.
A detailed business plan will now be developed around each one before the final bid is submitted to government this summer. These shortlisted projects will be the priority for the Town Deal over the next five years.
An investment plan will now also be developed for the town which will set out a vision for the next 10 to 15 years with a range of initiatives and projects including all those in the long list.
Full details of each of the schemes can be found on the #BrilliantBarrow website brilliantbarrow.org.uk along with details of how to have your say.
The shortlisted schemes are:
Barrow Learning Quarter
Creation of a new University Campus in Barrow to support key sectors, including energy and advanced manufacturing, while also supporting diversification of the economy and opportunities within to increase productivity, innovation and competitiveness for small as well as large businesses.
The Campus will incorporate a new Skills Hub, to help meet the area’s need for higher-level advanced academic and technical skills, and can support a longer term proposal for the creation of an Institute of Technology, focusing on a digital specialism to support a range of growing sectors including advanced manufacturing, health, business and energy.
Community Resilience Hubs
To establish a network of local community resilience hubs, where families of all ages, throughout their whole life, can develop their skills and confidence, access services and employment pathways and come together to build thriving communities.
Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure
A transformative programme of walking and cycling infrastructure improvements within Barrow, seeing the delivery of a high quality network connecting key nodes to boost health, replace car journeys with short trips on foot or bike and put Barrow at the forefront of active travel in the UK.
Place Development – Culture and Tourism
Building on Barrow’s proud industrial and maritime heritage and the attractiveness of its coastal setting, a programme of events and activities would be delivered to develop the visitor economy in Barrow.
Housing Renewal Programme
A new housing market renewal programme focused on key areas of need in the town potentially including Barrow Island, Walney and Hindpool/Central. This could include refurbishment, redevelopment, improvements to public spaces and new homes together with complementary skills and training activity.
The project is aimed at developing a supportive business environment for Barrow to boost Barrow’s enterprise overall, with a focus on helping the town become a centre of excellence and innovation for advanced manufacturing and clean growth.
The site would deliver high quality housing alongside leisure, retail and cultural development. This large scale development would challenge people’s views of central Barrow encouraging people to live and work there. It would add to the range of housing available in the Borough and provide new jobs and leisure opportunities whilst transforming a long term derelict site.
The Barrow Town Deal relates specifically to the town of Barrow-in-Furness. Alongside this, the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal is set to include a Place Programme that will support a number of smaller market and coastal towns across the Borderlands region.
Dalton-in-Furness has been put forward for inclusion in the Place Programme. Detailed work on a Place Plan for Dalton-in-Furness will be starting later in the year and the development of proposals will be supported by community and stakeholder engagement
Barrow Credit Union Needs You!
Barrow & District Credit Union is the local not for profit lending organisation which provides loans to people in our local community who are in need of funds to make ends meet. We focus our time and energy helping people for whom finances are often tight, and we also help people that most banks are not willing to support. They currently need to recruit more of our neighbours as ambassadors and members to help us do what they do best. They need people who have a little bit of spare money that may otherwise languish in a bank, to become members and save with them instead.
