Our South Copeland Development Officer, Beresford Moyle Rosser, gives us an update on what’s he’s been up to recently, the diverse range of organisations requesting support, and a Spring influx of motorhomes!

This past weekend, returning home from Levens Hall with their incredible topiary gardens, I must have counted at least 50 or more motorhomes on the road.

South Copeland is not normally an area for tourists so I have no idea who has let the cat out of the bag, but the tourists have arrived and are exploring this beautiful region of Cumbria with joy! And those motorhomes are getting BIGGER!

With Spring arriving with carpets of bluebells and fields of wild garlic ( I LOVE making wild garlic pesto for soups, pasta or brochettes with griddled peppers, artichokes and cold meats!) it also means the last of our Volunteer Fairs and Drop In sessions until the Autumn months when we start again.

Drop In sessions have now been held in Drigg, Muncaster, Eskdale Green and Waberthwaite and I have chosen the locations deliberately as I wanted remote communities in South Copeland to know they are important enough for Cumbria CVS to have a presence within their community and are there for them – to support and help where necessary.

And it has been amazing and eye-opening to hear some of the things that voluntary groups have come forward and asked for help with: Red Squirrel protection, amateur Cumberland wrestling, a play area for children to play safely, church restoration projects, footpaths for walkers and the list goes on. Whatever the request, it is important for that community and it is always a privilege to be able to serve where I can.

We have also had two Volunteer Recruitment Events in both Millom and also at Millom Without Parish with 19 stands in total across both events. One thing I have noticed at these events is the amount of networking that goes on between the various stand holders. Its infectious and goes to show how thriving the Voluntary Sector is in this part of Cumbria.

And long may that continue – motorhomes and tourists not withstanding!
