Inspiring children celebrated in Barrow

Children and their families gathered at The Forum, Barrow, in March for the Inspiring Barrow Kickstart programme year 8 awards.
Our Inspiring Barrow Kickstart programme works with children who have been identified by schools as needing assistance in improving self-confidence, communication skills, self-efficacy, self-esteem and team work.
Children from 6 Secondary schools took part in the popular after-school programme over 10 weeks, developing their skills and putting them to the test when they were asked to create a poster campaign that was launched on the evening.
The ideas for the posters, which have a common theme of positive connections, were driven by the children themselves. They are being produced and distributed by Oxley Development LTD, with the support of Jayne Moorby who is their Marketing Director and also sits on the Inspiring Barrow steering group.
Cumbria Constabulary were present on the evening to praise the children for their campaign, with Community Officer Sgt John Dilks explaining to the audience the importance of their work and telling them that the posters would be used on their website. The posters will also go up around the town in schools and colleges, partner youth hubs, Furness General Hospital and Doctor’s surgeries.
All the children received certificates for completing the programme, presented by Deputy Mayor Cllr Therese Assouad. Commander Philip Burns acted as Guest Speaker and presented Special Awards to the children.
One of the most emotional moments of the evening was when Ulverston Victoria High School student Anhelina, who is here with her Mother from Ukraine, received a special award for International Leadership.
Anhelina, who took the lead in many of the activities during the programme, said “It made me feel more confident and opened to people. I would say: I started to speak to people more. I have more friends now!”
