Get on board and into Trustee Volunteering!

Virtual Trustee Volunteer Information Session

Thursday 4 November, 6.30pm-8pm, online via zoom

Join Cumbria CVS and Cumbria Exchange on 4 November, along with a range of different charities and groups looking to recruit new trustees or board members at the Virtual Trustee Volunteer Information Session.

Being a trustee can be very rewarding. As a trustee you have the chance to support and shape the work and strategic direction of an organisation, and you can make a significant difference to a cause that matters to you. Trustees are the people in charge of a charity and play a vital role, volunteering their time and working together to make important decisions about the charity’s work. Trustees ensure their charity has a clear strategy, and that its work and goals are in line with its vision. Most trustee boards meet four to eight times a year. Many boards also have sub-committees that focus on areas of work or projects.

You may choose to get involved with a charity focused on a cause or an issue you are passionate about or because your life has been touched by the work of that voluntary organisation. It is also a great way to get involved in a community and to make a difference.

Being a trustee offers the opportunity for professional development. It can let you gain experience of strategy and leadership, and boost your CV. It will give you experience of being a trustee or board member, such as setting a strategic vision, influencing and negotiation, and managing risk. If you already have significant experience in these areas, it can be stimulating to use it in a different and potentially challenging context and gives you the opportunity to share your skills, knowledge, and experience with others. Roles could include being a general board member or being a chair, vice-chair, secretary or treasurer, etc.

The session will explore:

  • What a Volunteer Trustee or Board Member is
  • Roles and responsibilities of a trustee
  • Skills , qualities and time needed to be a trustee
  • Organisations looking to recruit new trustees and the range of trustee volunteering opportunities available
  • Training and support available
  • How to register and become a Volunteer Trustee

Organisations attending include:

Kendal Community Emergency Planning Group, Howgill Family Centre, 4Eden, Carnegie Theatre and Citizens Advice.
