National Cyber Security Centre’s Charity Sector Threat Report
This recently published report has been developed with Boards and trustees in mind, highlighting key threats charities face in 2023 and beyond. It reflects the ongoing threat to the sector as more charities run services and fundraising online and highlights how the sector is particularly attractive to attackers seeking financial gain.
It provides case studies showing how disruptive and costly incidents can be, it also warns about the threat from cyber criminals taking advantage of public generosity during times of hardship by masquerading as charities to receive donations.
Law Family Commission: Unleashing the Power of Civil Society
The Law Family Commission: Unleashing the Power of Civil Society was published in January 2023. The Commission makes important and relevant recommendations on productivity and effectiveness of civil society; data collection and use; funding; relationships between with business and policy makers; and unleashing the potential of civil society.
Local infrastructure is mentioned frequently, particularly in relation to the necessary capacity building it provides for the VCSE but also in the need for secure, long term, flexible funding; consistent quality; and strategic partnership working. Of major significance to us is the recommendation for a ‘root and branch’ review of local social sector infrastructure.
Research Engagement Network Development (REND) Programme
North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board (NENC ICB) is working in partnership with Voluntary Organisations’ Network North East (VONNE) and Cumbria CVS on a programme of work which seeks to increase the involvement of voluntary and community sector organisations in engaging children and young people in mental health research.
The Research Engagement Network Development (REND) Programme recognises that mental health services for children and young people are experiencing a significant rise in demand across the country, and to help reverse this trend it is essential that we develop a deeper understanding of the diversity of views and the experiences of children and young people, as their families, in our communities.
£64,000 of funding is available for the North East and North Cumbria region, to fund up to two VCSE organisations in each of the four Integrated Care Partnership areas.
The programme will support awarded VCSE organisations to co-design a programme of engagement with their respective communities and develop an evaluation plan to monitor the outcomes of each approach.
VCSE organisations of all sizes involved in supporting children and young people under 18 years old, and/or their families based in the North East and North Cumbria are invited to apply.
If you have any questions about the REND Programme, please email necsu.icb.involvement@nhs.net
Help shape ‘Introduction to research’ training for VCSE sector
VONNE is working with local researchers from the National Institute for Health and Care Research Applied Research Collaboration (NIHR ARC) for the North East and North Cumbria to provide opportunities for voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations to develop knowledge and skills around research.
Our aim is to support organisations to carry out and get involved in research that supports their work – for example getting feedback to inform how a service could be improved or to understand the issues impacting a community.
We are planning an ‘Introduction to research’ training session this Spring which will be free to anyone working in a VCSE organisation within the region, and open to those with and without any previous knowledge or experience of research.
We want to make sure this training is relevant and shape it to meet what people in the sector need. We’d welcome any views from people working for VCSE organisations with an interest in getting involved in or conducting their own research, particularly in relation to health and wellbeing. Please share your views in our short survey by 14 February.
State of the North 2023 – Looking out to level up
2022 was another tumultuous year for the North, and for levelling up. Severe regional inequalities endure despite government claiming it remains committed to the levelling up agenda.
The latest publication from IPPR North highlights how the UK is the most regionally unbalanced large, advanced economy and draws from international experience to demonstrate how empowering local places to level up is the key to success.
Boost for young people’s mental health research
The North East and North Cumbria (NENC) care system is set to receive almost £100,000 to help increase diversity and inclusion in children and young people’s mental health research participation across the region.
Funding will support up to two VCSE organisations in each of the four integrated care partnership areas, to co-design, alongside VONNE (the regional support body for the North East VCSE sector) and Cumbria CVS a programme of engagement, with their respective communities and develop an evaluation plan to monitor the outcomes of each approach.
Nearly half of homelessness charities fear service closures, survey says
Hundreds of homelessness charities may close or reduce services, due to the cost-of-living crisis, research has revealed.
Homeless Link, the national membership charity for homelessness organisations, conducted a survey in England between September and November 2022, before the government announced post-March energy support.
North Cumbria – Adult Mental Health, Learning Disabilities and Autism place-based plan
North Cumbria ICB is developing its 5-year Adult Mental Health, Learning Disabilities and Autism place-based plan. The plan is being developed over the next few months and we would like to hear from as many Third Sector organisations within North Cumbria as possible.
We have several different ways in which you can get involved in the development of this plan, including surveys, drop-in sessions and 1-2-1 interviews.

More partnerships with businesses will ‘unleash’ civil society’s power, says report
Strengthening relationships with policymakers and businesses could enable charities to unleash their full potential, a landmark report has argued.
Unleashing the Power of Civil Society calls on the government, private sector and charities to work together to bring mutual benefits and tackle society’s biggest problems.
Shift from local to national charity registrations over past decade, figures show
The number of new charities working exclusively in local areas has steadily declined over the last 10 years while England-wide charity registrations have risen, according to Charity Commission data.
Civil Society News’ analysis of the regulator’s data shows new charities focused on working in the 119 local areas in England have fallen steadily in the last decade from 2,974 in 2012 to 1,701 in 2022.
