Should we X-it?

Should we be on X?
We would like your view on whether we should continue posting on X (formerly Twitter). You’re probably aware of the decline of social media platform X, and concerns about it becoming an increasingly toxic & abusive space, amplifying disinformation and other discriminatory content, and failing to take adequate action against hate speech.
Some voluntary, community, faith and social enterprise organisations have stopped posting, or left the platform altogether, including: Morecambe Bay Partnership, ACEVO, Race Equality Foundation, Safety Net UK and CAfS.
With users exiting the platform, we’ve seen a noticeable drop in engagement for our posts, and our follower count has been decreasing. By contrast, our LinkedIn and Facebook accounts have strong engagement and are gaining followers.
For balance, there may be reasons why we should stay, including:
- Our audience on X is primarily VCFSE organisations and their supporters, and people interested in volunteering, who engage and interact with us
- Providing some much-needed positivity – leaving could potentially give voices of hate more power and create an echo chamber of conspiracy
- We may have followers who aren’t on other platforms
- It has been a key channel during emergency response situations
