Charities urged to improve ‘nebulous’ trustee recruitment processes

Charities have been urged to improve the transparency and inclusivity of their “nebulous at best” processes for recruiting trustees.

Priscilla Tomaz, from the Young Trustees Movement, made the remarks when addressing the audience at a City Hall Roundtable event on removing barriers to trusteeship this week.

“The recruitment process for trustees is, I would say, nebulous at best,” Tomaz said. “Most of the trustees that I know were appointed without any sort of formal recruitment process.”

Nandy eyes faster probes of charities promoting extremism as new powers awaited

Culture secretary Lisa Nandy has asked officials to work with the Charity Commission to speed up the process for investigating charities suspected of engaging in or promoting extremist behaviour, including strengthening its powers to close them down if necessary.

Further measures now under consideration include mandatory trustee ID verification, the digitisation of charity accounts, and a strengthening of local authority powers to issue fines and take other enforcement action to tackle unlicensed street fundraising.

The measures were announced in a policy report published this week, and are in addition to a new consultation expected to launch shortly, which will “road-test” plans to automatically ban individuals with a criminal conviction for a hate crime from serving as charity trustees or senior managers.

Commission told to ‘step up’ approach to safeguarding in parliamentary debate

MPs have urged the Charity Commission to take a tougher approach to safeguarding issues in the sector, with some accusing the regulator of failing to take sufficient action.

In a debate in the House of Commons last week, MPs discussed safeguarding in small religious organisations and how children there can be protected from abuse.

Labour MP Sam Carling said: “We must have ways to ensure that organisations that promote harm towards vulnerable people, particularly through mandated shunning, cannot gain the tax, reputational and funding benefits of a charity.”

Rise in AI ‘poverty porn’ hurting charity sector, research warns

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being used to fabricate images of poverty in charity campaigns, which research argues has reinforced harmful tropes and undermined sector credibility.

A study from the University of East Anglia (UEA) revealed a rise in AI images, with poverty as the dominant theme, depicted in photorealistic form to enhance campaigns.
