Multicultural Cumbria Tea and Talk Welcome Space
Tuesdays in February & March, Whitehaven. Multicultural Cumbria would like to invite community groups to bring their participants and join a free Tea and Talk Welcome Space.

Monthly sessions, March to November, Barrow. Playful Nature offers nature connection, music, singing, drumming, campfires, mindfulness and more…
The ‘Listening to the Land’ project offers an exciting opportunity to explore how tuning into nature can inspire creativity, and support wellbeing. This project is aimed at adults (18+) living in Furness and South Lakes.

Protect Duty (Martyn’s Law) Workshop
Tuesday 10th March, online. Now the Protect Duty (Martyn’s law) has been passed by parliament many organisations are going to have to work out how this affects them.
This workshop will look at what you have to do in the standard tier (buildings with a capacity between 200 and 799 people) to meet the legislation and also simple things to make your life easier. Some of the things are also sensible to consider for those buildings who are not in scope of the legislation.
A Web for All: Accessibility, usability and inclusivity online
Wednesday 11th March, online. This free 2-hour webinar hosted by Few and Far, a digital agency specialising in non-profits, is aimed at charities, community foundations, CICs and any other good cause who wants to improve the accessibility of their website and make their website more accessible, usable and inclusive for everyone.

VCSE National Summit
Wednesday 11th March, online. A free national training and inspiration day for VCSEs across the UK – Join a unique, nationwide webinar designed to help VCSEs – charities, social enterprises, schools, clubs and local initiatives strengthen their role in today’s social value and procurement landscape. The event caters organisation in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Exercise Impassible
Wednesday 11th March, This Table Top Exercise is a training opportunity being led by Counter Terrorism Police North West – there is an opportunity for Voluntary Organisations to participate. All expressions of interest should be directed in the first instance to Alison Love alison.love@cumbria.gov.uk from the Cumbria LRF team who is collating responses prior to submission.
This exercise will explore the Local, Regional and UK’s readiness to respond to a Maritime Terrorism incident on Lake Windermere. It aims to improve multi-agency coordination, strengthen Local Resilience Forum (LRF) capabilities, and support the development of inland maritime contingency plans in line with JESIP and developing MMER Joint Operating Procedures (JOPS).
Growing reliance on inland waterways for recreation, logistics, business and infrastructure makes them potential targets for hostile acts. Lake Windermere’s geographic location, coupled with a high volume of international tourism makes it a potential target for such an act.

Risk Management for Trustees
Thursday 19th March, online. In an era of increasing concern regarding liabilities, litigation, regulatory compliance and reputational risk, charities are coming under greater scrutiny than ever. Boardroom competency in identifying, managing and mitigating risk is now a required skill and trustees must be able to scrutinise their executive and professional advisors’ management of risk, as well as being able to apply the same tools and techniques to their own decision making.
This course is a non-technical introduction to risk and risk management designed to enable trustees to understand and manage risk generally, but with a focus on risks related to governance, employment, assets, service users and third parties. By the end of the day, you will be better equipped to interact effectively with professional advisors and regulators, hold your executive to account, improve your own decision making and govern your organisation’s risk management activities.

Where Are Your Next Generation of Volunteers
Tuesday 24th March, online. Volunteer numbers have been falling since 2020. Considerable changes have occurred in how the public wants to volunteer. There has also been a rise in younger people wanting to give back to their communities, contribute to their environment, and make a difference in their neighbourhoods.
It is important for any group to start thinking about how it can adapt and remove the barriers so that younger people can get involved in volunteering. This session will offer you some practical ways to make volunteering for your organisation more appealing to younger people.

Thursday 9th April, online. Artificial intelligence (AI) images have become widespread across our sector. AI-generated imagery raises serious concerns around ethics, responsibility, duty of care, and representation. As part of their Conscious AI campaign, Charity Digital are joining forces with The Saltways, an ethical filmmaking company, to show you how to use AI images ethically.
Emma Bracegirdle, founder of The Saltways, will lead the webinar and explore the current situation across the sector, examine how charities are using AI, and look at some easy, best practice advice for charities. She’ll explore how AI-generation actually works, looking at the processes at play, and cover the core risks charities face.
Emergency First Aid at Work
Thursday 9th April, Barrow. Where a workplace first aid risk assessment identifies a need for an Emergency First Aider in the Workplace, this one-day qualification meets the requirements of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 and the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1982.

Award in Safeguarding for Work, Education and Life Level 1
From Monday 13th April, for 10 weeks, in Kendal. This level 1 course aims to give you an improved knowledge of the meaning of safeguarding in the workplace, education and in life in general. You will learn about different forms of abuse and learn ways that you can recognise if abuse may be taking place. You will find out about the safeguarding issues caused by modern technology and learn about discrimination and victimisation. Finally you will learn what to do if your have safeguarding concerns and the importance of disclosing information to professionals.
This is an ideal introductory course for anyone working or volunteering with children or vulnerable adults or who would like to improve their understanding of safeguarding in general.

Reserves: What They Are and How to Calculate Them
Tuesday 21st April, online. Reserves are a critical element when building small charity resilience. However, they are often, for very valid reasons, miscalculated.
The session will look at Why we hold reserves, how to calculate reserves, what a good reserves policy looks like and how to report on reserves.
Your Voice, Your Story: Intro to Community Podcasting courses

Have a story to tell or voices in your community you’d love to share with the world? This course is all about helping beginners and community groups start their very own podcast. You don’t need to be a tech expert — we’ll show you everything step by step.
This CPD course uses a blended learning approach, which means you’ll get practical tasks to complete at the end of each session. Step by step, you’ll be working on your own podcast as you learn, building both your skills and confidence along the way. By the end, you’ll be ready not only to produce, share, and promote your own podcast, but also to guide a group through the process in the future. [NEW] Quarter of a million visits to GoVo volunteering platform, reports RVS
More than a quarter of a million members of the public have visited the volunteering website GoVo, the Royal Voluntary Service (RVS) has reported.
The digital platform, which was launched in October 2025, has been backed by £5m from the People’s Postcode Lottery, with the aim to “supercharge” volunteering in the UK by widening access and removing barriers.
RVS asked charities of all sizes to sign up in June last year, receiving more than 2,000 registrations from charities prior to its October launch.
[NEW] Burnout rife among younger charity workers, survey shows
Data has revealed that burnout is rife across charity sector staff demographics, with younger workers more likely to consider sacrificing personal values to get higher pay amid economic pressures.
The latest Expectations and Values at Work survey by CharityJob outlines that gen Z staff prioritise job security and positive social impact, but due to factors such as the cost-of-living crisis, would work in roles counter to their personal values.
This is despite gen Z workers being most likely to see positive social impact through their work as “extremely important”, at 43%, compared to 32% overall.
