Closing date for applications:

Location: Cumbria – from home, at the Festival office near Tebay & Cartmel Racecourse

Responsible to: Festival Producer

Duration of post: Mid March– June 2026, part-time. Hours to be agreed.

The Lake District Book Festival is coming to Cartmel Racecourse annually from 2026. The inaugural festival takes place 12th-14th June. At the 2026 festival, there will be approximately 40 talks taking place alongside one another in three separate venues on the racecourse.

The mission statement of the Festival is Bringing the world to the Lakes and the Lakes to the world. In tandem with this, a Schools Programme places a strong emphasis on giving opportunities to young people from the Furness Peninsula, opportunities that might not normally be within their reach.

So an experienced locally-based individual is sought to put together a volunteer group who will help over the weekend of the festival. The festival organisers would like to see a volunteer group that is made up of young people from local schools including Cartmel CofE, Dallam & St Bernard’s CofE in Barrow; as well as adult members of the local community and to deliver a volunteer programme that creates as much buzz around itself as it does around the Festival.

Main Purpose of the Job:

  • To create a volunteer programme that will enable the Lake District Book Festival, Cartmel Racecourse, 12th-14th June 2026 to be delivered successfully to the public
  • To create a volunteer programme that will ensure that all volunteers, young and not so young, come to the end of the Festival with a real sense of involvement and achievement.
  • To create a volunteer programme that has longevity – in other words, that will be so successful that people will want to return as volunteers year after year.
  • To write the Safeguarding policy for the Festival and to supervise this, ensuring that everyone on the Festival team, where necessary, is properly trained.
