Cumbria CVS is looking for an experienced leader from the voluntary sector to advance the organisation to its next stage of development. This is an exciting opportunity to support and amplify the voices of hundreds of voluntary sector organisations in Cumbria that provide highly valued services across the county.
Cumbria CVS is primarily an infrastructure organisation that exists to support all voluntary sector organisations in Cumbria, it also delivers sector projects either directly or as a coordinator.
In this position, you will be responsible for leading and providing strategic direction to a dedicated and capable staff group. Your role will involve enabling the staff to offer valuable support to voluntary organisations in Cumbria, as well as coordinating and implementing projects aligned with the organisations’ objectives. You will also engage with the sector, ensuring they have a voice, and involve key stakeholders such as local authorities, healthcare organisations, and major funders across the county to advocate for the sector and seek their support in enhancing its capabilities.
Job Purpose
- Enable and promote Cumbrian voluntary sector organisations
- Leadership of Cumbria CVS in line with its charitable objects, policies and as directed by the Board of Trustees
- Develop, in conjunction with Trustees, the strategic direction and financial sustainability for Cumbria CVS
- Lead the Senior Management Team to deliver strategic and operational plans, within charity and other relevant laws and best practice
Principal Duties
Representation and Partnership
- Engage with Stakeholders to align objectives with those of its stakeholders by collaborating with voluntary and community organisations, local authorities, and other partners to foster meaningful relationships
- Develop, support and maintain effective working relationships and partnerships across Cumbria’s voluntary sector, key statutory partners, commissioners and regulators to deliver strategy
- Understand the sector and their support needs
- Support and enable voluntary sector representation in multiple sectors
- Demonstrate effective system leadership
- Act as the strategic point of contact for Cumbria CVS
- Represent Cumbria CVS and nurture effective relationships across local, regional, and national networks. Actively seek opportunities to expand and promote Cumbria CVS’s role and impact
Staff and Volunteer Management
- Lead development and maintenance of positive and supportive organisational culture
- Actively support trustee, volunteer and staff development within CCVS and more widely
- Line management, support and leadership of the Senior Management Team
- Ensure effective delegation and performance monitoring systems are in place Strategy and Planning
Strategy and Planning
- Continuously monitor and stay updated on current social, economic, political, environmental, and other relevant trends. Use this knowledge to identify strategic development opportunities for Cumbria CVS and proactively adapt to changing circumstances
- Lead organisational strategy development and review across multiple years/sectors
- Ensure translation of strategy into operational plans to achieve organisational objectives
- Oversee the development of effective business models, monitoring and evaluation of services, impact and quality
- Seek appropriate service and project development opportunities for CCVS and wider sector, ensuring effective entry and exit strategies
- Support wider voluntary sector strategy development across Cumbria and positively influence related sector strategies
Financial and Legal Management
- Ensure effective financial, resource and contract monitoring, management and control systems
- Oversight of fundraising for CCVS to support the financial sustainability of operational plans
- Empower others to develop income-generating services and enterprises
Communications
- Establish effective communication strategy with key audiences, setting appropriate tone
- Act as organisational spokesperson in various media on proactive and reactive basis
- Support wider voluntary sector communications (local, regional, national) Governance
Governance
- Advise Cumbria CVS Trustees of responsibilities, duties and recognised good practice
- Support the Cumbria CVS Chair, providing briefings in advance of Trustees’ meetings
- Ensure effective organisational governance structures and systems
- Provide Trustees with appropriate information to enable effective discharge of their duties
- Ensure regulatory standards monitoring and reporting
- Undertake the duties of Company Secretary for Cumbria CVS
- Oversee the development and review of organisational policies
- Support wider voluntary sector representation and governance
General Duties (all CCVS staff)
- Support and promote the principles of Equality and Diversity
- Support and promote the interests of Cumbria CVS, third sector groups and organisations
- Support and promote the values of Cumbria CVS
- Carry out such tasks and duties from time to time as are required by Cumbria CVS Board of Trustees for the maintenance and development of Cumbria CVS
