Upperby Gala Event – opportunity to fundraise
Bank Holiday Monday 29 May from 1pm – 4pm and we have the added bonus of celebrating the 100th Centenary Year of Hammonds Pond.
The event attracts a crowd of around 5,000 and there’s a mixture of all kinds of family entertainment including main arena activities, funfair rides, arts & crafts, face painting, music, comedy, balloon modelling archery, boating and much more.

Dying Matters Awareness Week
w/c 8 May. The national Dying Matters Awareness week will be encouraging communities across the country to come together to talk about death, dying and grief in the workplace.
“57% of employees will have experienced a bereavement in the last five years and every day, more than 600 people quit work to look after older and disabled relatives”, so many colleagues have been bereaved or experiencing anticipatory grief, so it is important to start to normalise these conversations and for people to realise that they are not alone. Online Training: Understanding Governance
3-4 May 2023. Improve your skills as a charity trustee by attending Understanding Governance Stage 1: The Trustee Role.
Led by governance expert Dorothy Dalton, this course will take place online on the mornings of 3-4 May. The interactive programme provides an overview of governance fundamentals and the key responsibilities of trustees. It will give new trustees a comprehensive introduction to the role and provide experienced trustees with an important refresher.
Electricity North West: Community Connects Event
To launch the next round of Electricity North West’s (ENW) award-winning Powering our Communities fund they’re hosting a Community Connects webinar on Thursday 11 May 2023 at 10am – 11.30am. The aim of the Powering our Communities fund is to provide seed funding to support communities to take part in the energy transition.
Applications are sought for projects that support the development of community and local energy in our region. Each year ENW look to award up to £15,000 per project and to find out more about how to apply sign up to attend this webinar.
Local Infrastructure and Community Transport Association – Creating Connections

Fundraising Convention 2023
3-4 July, QEII Centre. Fundraising Convention is the largest in-person event for fundraising professionals in the UK, and the one time of year, we meet as a sector to feel part of a community that will support and empower us. This year’s Fundraising Convention theme is Connection.
We will provide a space to imagine what could be possible, a place to be inspired, discover the latest trends, learn best practices and network with others who understand the challenges and opportunities that a job in fundraising brings. It is a learning opportunity not to be missed.
Skills Bootcamp in Project Management
From May 2023. Develop your Project Management knowledge with the University of Cumbria and Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership (CLEP) new & improved Skills Bootcamp in Project Management.
This programme is available for individuals living and working in Cumbria with limited experience of working in projects who want to develop their skills.

This Forum, which creates the conditions for effective “conversations about a healthier future”, brings together representatives of community groups of interest and place and senior representatives of the health and care system.

Carbon literacy training for voluntary groups & social enterprises
21 & 28 June 2023. Take your organisation on its first steps to environmental sustainability by joining Cumbria Action for Sustainability’s accredited carbon literacy course. Half-price subsidised places are now available for employees and volunteers from organisations in Cumbria.
The course, hosted on Zoom, will give you the facts about the latest climate science. You’ll come away with the skills to calculate your carbon footprint and see where you can make improvements to reduce it. You’ll also explore the kinds of actions needed to put those improvements in place – in your organisation, community or at home.

NCVO takes over FSI’s assets following its closure
NCVO has announced it will be taking over the key small charity assets of the Foundation for Social Improvement (FSI) after it closed recently due to funding issues.
The company ceased operations on 2 May and transferred the running of Small Charity Week to NCVO, which it had already planned to partner with on the project.

Publicly-funded charities warned of media backlash risk to campaigning activity
Charities have been warned of potential media criticism when they campaign on issues related to their cause.
One of the key attacks on charity campaigning comes from the right-wing press, Halima Begum, chief executive of the Runnymede Trust, told an event last month. Speaking at Civil Society Media’s Trustee Exchange, the incoming CEO of ActionAid said one of the easiest ways charities can be attacked for campaigning is by the right-wing press criticising how much public funding it receives.

Carbon Copy – a UK charity working to accelerate local action and a community powered response to tackle climate and biodiversity crises – have launched a new update to their Carbon Zero Explorer, enabling you to see how much the climate has changed where you live.
Using Professor Ed Hawkins’ Warming Stripes which give a visual representation of changing climate and temperatures, the Carbon Zero Explorer allows you to search for your local area and download your warming stripes, giving you an opportunity to use them to start bigger conversations locally and connect people with the reality of what’s happening where they live and why action needs to happen now.
How people’s lived experience is improving health and care services in our region

Working in partnership with people and communities, their new involvement and engagement strategy ‘Lived Experiences’, highlights how the personal knowledge and impact of people who access health and care services can be used to deliver more effective, joined-up services.
Get involved in developing the regional Women’s Health Strategy
Our Integrated Care System colleagues are looking for volunteers to join a reference group to plan a North East and North Cumbria Women’s Health Conference. This will take place later this year and will help to take forward the development of the region’s Women’s Health Strategy.
The group will develop themes and ideas for the event including discussion about:
- Ensuring women’s voices are heard.
- Improving access to services.
- Addressing disparities in outcomes among women.
- Better information and education.
- Greater understanding of how women’s health affects their experience in the workplace.
- Supporting more research, improving the evidence base and spearheading the drive for better data.

Regulator reports 25% rise in fundraising concerns raised
The Fundraising Regulator has reported that the number of concerns raised with around charities’ fundraising activity has risen by 20-25% on the year.
Speaking at the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Charities and Volunteering in April, chief executive Gerald Oppenheim said the regulator was “increasingly busy” and that he had seen a rise in the number of fraudulent fundraising pages set up.
Will the Big Help Out be an ‘unprecedented’ volunteering event or a ‘damp squib’?
To mark the king’s coronation, people across the country are being encouraged to volunteer, starting on 8 May, a bank holiday Monday. An app has been launched for the Big Help Out (BHO) and organisers say tens of thousands of people have signed up to volunteer.

Snowballs and Eels
NAVCA recently published “Snowballs and Eels”, a rapid review of national funding for cross-sector partnership building in health and care in England.
Commissioned by The National Lottery Community Fund, the report looks at what funding from national sources has been made available to support the VCSE’s engagement in partnerships with health and care system partners recent years.

NCVO reports volunteering downturn in the UK
Some of the key ways people volunteer have declined over the past years, according to a report published in April.
The Time Well Spent 2023 report from NCVO says that since 2018, the proportion of people raising money or taking part in sponsored events has gone down from 11% to 6%.
£2bn more donated to charities in 2022, says CAF report
An estimated £12.7bn was donated to charities in 2022, an increase of £2bn on the year before, according to the UK Giving Report 2023.
Charities Aid Foundation (CAF)’s latest study of household donor behaviour reports that giving spiked in March and April last year, seemingly in reaction to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with average donations increasing in those months to £85 and £64, respectively.
Impact of digital exclusion on access to healthcare for people seeking asylum
This Red Cross report finds that people seeking asylum in England are at risk of missing out on basic healthcare services because they have limited access to the internet and digital tools.
Using a peer research approach, where refugees who have been through the asylum process interviewed people seeking asylum, the report provides a detailed picture of the barriers to online health and care services.
