Training and Events

FREE Carbon Literacy Courses for voluntary, community and social enterprise sector organisations in Kendal

Take your organisation on its first steps to environmental sustainability by joining one of Cumbria Action for Sustainability’s accredited Carbon Literacy courses, especially for those working or volunteering in the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector.

Climate and Carbon Literacy training provides a clear understanding of climate science, an awareness of carbon costs and the impacts of everyday activities. It also builds an ability and motivation to reduce emissions on an individual, community and organisational basis.

This course, hosted on Zoom, will give you the facts about the latest climate science. It will equip you with the skills to calculate your carbon footprint, identify where you can make improvements, and actions to put those improvements in place in your organisation, community or at home.

This training is available free of charge to 5 organisations (1 person per organisation) that are based or deliver services within the Kendal Town parish boundary thanks to funding from Kendal Town Council, the National Lottery Community Fund and County Durham Community Foundation. The 5 free places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Online Developing a Fundraising Strategy Training Course

Thursday 19 January & Thursday 26 January. Across the sector, fundraisers and charity leaders are working to ensure their organisations put themselves in the best possible position to meet the future needs of their beneficiaries.

In response to demand from the sector, Get Grants Online Developing a Fundraising Strategy Training Course has been created to give fundraisers the practical skills and knowledge to develop an effective fundraising strategy and increase their organisation’s income and sustainability.

 

Online Major Donor Fundraising Course

Tuesday 17 January & Tuesday 24 January. Get Grants Major Donor Fundraising Course offers a comprehensive overview of the major donor fundraising process and includes practical examples for you to apply to your organisation.

This course is ideal for fundraisers of all levels and organisations of any size. Whether you would like to assess if your organisation is ready to develop a major gifts programme, or if you already have a programme in place, but would like to review some of the foundational elements, then this course is suitable for you.

‘Stand up against street harassment’ bystander webinar

Multiple dates in December. Sessions are an hour long and free of charge to attend.

People and organisations want to take steps to address the prevalence of unwanted and aggressive behaviours such as harassment that underly the broader cycle of violence against women and girls, which the Trust has worked on since its inception over three decades ago.

This programme drives awareness of harassment, upskilling and empowering individuals across various settings such as schools, public transport, festivals, public spaces, and workplaces, to help defuse situations, discourage harassers, and support victims.

Wednesday 7th December. CYCW22 aims to bring together youth & community projects & organisations, local charities, parish councils, local government, social enterprises from across North Cumbria & Carlisle for a celebration of the work of the community & youth sector and share good practice, learn and inspire each other!

One the day we will consider key themes that present opportunities and challenges for us and the communities we serve. There will be participatory workshops, key note speakers, Q&A panel with opportunities to network.

Going Green Together – Carbon Literacy Course

Cumbria Action for Sustainability have released another date for their subsidised Carbon Literacy course for those operating in the voluntary, community or social enterprise sector (VCSE). These accredited courses are for groups looking to take the next steps with their organisation’s sustainability strategy.

The course will delve into the facts about the latest climate science, and you will be equipped with the skills to calculate your carbon footprint. This will help you identify where improvements in your organisation can be made, and actions to put those improvements in place.

The course, hosted on Zoom, is split into two sessions, in the new year, on Tuesday 17 & 24 January.

This is a fantastic opportunity to take advantage of heavily subsidised training exclusively for VCSE groups, with 50% off the usual ticket price, thanks to the Going Green Together project, funded by the National Lottery Community Fund and County Durham Community Foundation.

Culture Camp: Cross-sector collaboration

Thurs 1 Dec, 11am to 1pm. The Innovation Agency’s Coaching Academy is pleased to offer another FREE learning and networking opportunity as part of its Culture Camp series. This session is for health and social care professionals, especially those in leadership positions. We also welcome interested staff from voluntary, community, faith and social enterprise (VCFSE) organisations.

Eden Project Communities Camp applications are open

Community Camp is the Eden Project’s annual immersive learning experience for people who are interested in, or new to, community action. If you want to make a positive change in your community but don’t know where to get started, this is for you. There are Community Camps coming up between now and March 2023, two of these are face to face camps at the Eden Project and two of them will take place online.

Charities adopt permanent four-day week to boost efficiency and staff wellbeing

Charities including those taking part in a six-month pilot programme have moved to a permanent four-day working week to boost staff wellbeing and increase efficiency.

Friends of the Earth said it has reduced its working week from 35 to 30 hours as part of a “wellbeing initiative that is also formalising our hybrid working arrangements”.

Comic Relief launches emergency cost-of-living appeal

Comic Relief has launched a cost-of-living appeal in partnership with the Evening Standard and the Independent, to raise urgent funds for people in need this winter. Money raised through the On the Breadline cost-of-living Christmas appeal will support community organisations working to get help to people across the UK who need it most. This could include supporting foodbanks, and providing help, advice and mental health support, along with warm winter clothes, electric blankets and water bottles, energy top cards, and food vouchers.

Comic Relief has donated £1 million to launch the appeal and help organisations tackle the cost-of-living crisis.

Government kickstarts £2.6 billion investment in communities as UK takes back control of EU funding

Local spending plans for the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) have been approved recently, in a bid to turbo charge levelling up through support of local businesses, boosting skills, reviving high streets and improving local pride.

The UKSPF succeeds EU structural funding and has seen the UK Government working with local leaders to direct funding to where it’s needed most.

Citizens Advice staff ‘running out of tools’ as funding declines amid rising demand

Funding at Citizens Advice has fallen by more than £9m year on year as some staff “feel that they’re running out of tools” to support beneficiaries.

The charity’s latest accounts for the year ending 31 March 2022 shows that total income decreased by 6%, from £162.7m to £153.6m.

In Jane Ide’s first six months leading ACEVO, the country has seen three prime ministers and three civil society ministers.

Previously chief executive of NAVCA for four years, Ide re-entered the world of charity infrastructure in May after leading charity Creative and Cultural Skills since 2020.

DCMS cuts spending on civil society by nearly a quarter

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has reduced its funding for civil society by almost a quarter, according to its recently published accounts.

DCMS cut its funding for the Office for Civil Society (OCS) in the year to March 2022 was a tenth of the previous year’s total. At £32m, this is the lowest amount the OCS has received since it was moved to the department in 2016.

Commission chair urges wealthy to help charities survive ‘existential crisis’

Chair of the Charity Commission, Orlando Fraser, has appealed to the wealthiest in society to be more philanthropic as charities face an “existential crisis”.

In a speech at the Beacon Philanthropy Forum he outlined the ways in which philanthropic giving can support the charity sector during this economic crisis, and explained how the Commission itself will support philanthropy.

Age UK to release £5m from reserves to prevent more network closures

National charity Age UK has said it will use £5m from its reserves to support its local subsidiaries during the winter.

Speaking in parliament this month, the main charity’s head of network resilience, Kirsty Gaskell-Sinclair, said three local Age UK charities closed last year and she expects to see more in the next 12 months.

Getting life’s essentials to people this winter

2.4 million adults are expected to turn to charities, food banks or community groups to access unaffordable items this winter, and almost 1 in 4 low-income families say they will be going without presents for festive celebrations this year, according to a recent YouGov survey by the charity In Kind Direct.

In Kind Direct redistribute consumer products donated by companies, like toilet roll, shampoo, laundry and cleaning supplies, warm clothing, hats, gloves, children’s gifts, toys, books, small electrical appliances and make-up, to local charities, community groups, foodbanks, schools and CICs.

Social tariffs

The government has worked with a range of Internet Service Providers (IPSs) and Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to deliver low-cost broadband and phone service packages, called social tariffs, for those on low incomes.

Social tariffs are available for people claiming Universal Credit, Pension Credit and some other benefits, with some providers offering deals from £15 a month. The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport is encouraging councils to raise awareness of these products and has produced a stakeholder toolkit which includes social media materials, posters and leaflets to help councils share this information across their communications channels.

The Help for Households campaign homepage brings together over 40 support schemes that the public may be able to access depending on eligibility. There are also online tools for the public to check the support they might be eligible for and how to access it.

Peers vote to embed social value in public procurement after push from sector

Members of the House of Lords have voted to mandate public commissioners to consider social value when tendering contracts.

In November, the chamber voted through two amendments to the procurement bill put forward by two cross-party peers compelling commissioners to consider social value.

Charity bodies urge government to hasten EU replacement funding after fresh delay

Charity sector bodies have said the latest apparent delay in the government’s distribution of EU replacement funding could be detrimental to local communities and vulnerable people.

November’s autumn statement appears to have removed a previously-pledged first £400m payment from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) to local authorities, which had been scheduled for this financial year.

Charities facing ‘cliff edge’ without further energy bills support, government warned

Communities will suffer if the government does not support voluntary organisations with their energy bills beyond March 2023, a group of charity leaders has warned.

NCVO and the Civil Society Group wrote a letter to business secretary Grant Shapps this week, warning that many charities are at risk of closing as they cannot afford soaring energy costs.

Cost of Living resources

Two new guides are available to support community leaders and individuals, created by organisations involved in the Cumbria Poverty Working Group.

The guide designed to help Community Leaders support people in their communities aims to give information on the key messages and where people can access support, with a little more detail and background information than it is possible to include in short press releases and other public information.

The Cost of Living Support guide is a public information leaflet, being delivered to all households in Cumbria, and provides information and advice on how to get help and support.

 

National Lottery reports £919m raised for good causes this year as takeover announced

The National Lottery’s outgoing licence holder has reported making a record £919.2m for good causes in the first half of the financial year.

Camelot, which will hand over the lottery licence to Allwyn next year, also revealed this week that it has been bought by the new operator.

Most charity fraud perpetrated by staff or volunteers, report suggests

The majority of charity fraud cases occurring in the last 12 months were perpetrated by staff members or volunteers, research has suggested.

Accountancy firm BDO and charity the Fraud Advisory Panel surveyed 100 UK-based charities for their second Charity Fraud Survey which looks at the impact of fraud on the sector.

NCVO want your thoughts on the Energy Bill Relief Scheme

NCVO works with it’s members to amplify voices of the VCSE sector and influence change, but they need to hear from you in order to do that.

The government is reviewing the Energy Bill Relief Scheme, which currently caps commercial energy prices until March 2023. NCVO want to know whether the scheme has helped your organisation. They’re asking you to email them with your thoughts at policy@ncvo.org.uk

 

The State of the State 2022/23

This year’s State of the State report is now available to download covering opinions and data from the pandemic to the cost-of-living crisis. The report finds public attitudes deeply affected by the cost-of-living crisis, pessimistic for the future and passionate about climate change.

After years of reacting to crises, the report finds officials across the public sector eager for reform and calling for bold decisions about the future of government and public services.

High energy bills driving third of people to cut donations, survey suggests

A third of people in the UK and Ireland are likely to cut down the amount they give to charity due to increases to their energy bills, according to new research.

In a survey of nearly 68,000 people, a third said they were likely to cut down the amount they give to charity because of the current economic climate while 25% were less likely to do so.

Charity fraud losses up 44% in 2022, data shows

Fraudsters have stolen £2.3m from charities in 2022 so far, according to newly published data.

Action Fraud’s figures show that there were 408 reports of charity fraud between January and November 2022, amounting to a total loss of £2.3m.

Most charities using reserves to cover core costs, survey suggests

Most charities are worried about whether they can survive the cost-of-living crisis and are using reserves to cover core costs, according to research published recently.

Some 51% of charities said they were using their reserves to cover core costs, compared to 40% a year earlier, according to the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) survey.

Third of consumers may cut charity donations over festive period, research says

More than a third of consumers may cut their charitable donations in the next three months, according to new research.

A survey of more than 1,000 people by agency Beautiful Insights found that 36% of consumers may make these changes, which the researchers estimated could see charities lose £580m.

Have Your Say! Revised Cartmel Conservation Area Management Plan Consultation

A Revised Conservation Area Management Plan (CAMP) for Cartmel is being prepared. Following public consultation earlier this year, South Lakeland District Council has launched a further public consultation on the revised draft Cartmel Conservation Area Management Plan, to take account of the comments received and additional work undertaken.

Charities consulted on first-ever international financial reporting guidance

The first ever draft guidance on international reporting standards for not-profit organisations has been published as part of a project to develop global rules for charity accounting.

Humentum and the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) announced the release of the International Non-Profit Accounting Guidance, Exposure Draft 1 (INPAG ED1) at the World Congress of Accountants in India recently.

Third Sector Trends release first report

Following a large-scale survey earlier this year, Third Sector Trends have released their first report for 2022 focussing on structure, purpose, energy and impact of the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector in England and Wales.

Third Sector Trends is the largest survey of VCSE organisations across England and Wales and is designed to compliment the NCVO’s UK Civil Society Almanac.

 

Key insights from the NCVO Almanac 2022

Earlier this year, NCVO published their 2022 Almanac, providing insights into the state of the voluntary sector based on 2019/20 financial accounts. The report helps us gain perspective on how prepared charities were going into the Covid-19 pandemic, the initial impact that it’s had on the voluntary sector and the future effects of the cost-of-living crisis.
