Goodbye X, hello BlueSky
April 18, 2025
We recently asked for your views on whether we should continue posting on X (formerly Twitter).
Concerns about it becoming an increasingly toxic & abusive space, amplifying disinformation and other discriminatory content, and failing to take adequate action against hate speech, prompted the survey, and the response from the Voluntary, Community, Faith and Social Enterprise sector in Cumbria was clear – stop.

82% of respondents said No (with 12% saying maybe, 6% yes).

On whether we should be on another platform instead (as well as our existing Facebook and LinkedIn accounts), 44% said No, 38% Yes, and 19% Maybe.

Regarding which channel to switch to if we did leave, 80% said BlueSky, 10% Mastodon, and 10% something else.
We will stop posting to X soon, but will leave the account active. This will allow us to signpost to our other accounts, prevent our username being picked up by someone else, and keep our options option for a return if the situation on X improves. A final post with a graphic will be added in the coming weeks, explaining why we’ve stopped posting and where to find us online.
We value the interaction and engagement we get from our presence on social media, and the opportunity it affords us to share news and information that helps the VCFSE sector in Cumbria to achieve their aims. So, we’ll soon be starting to post to our new account on BlueSky – cumbriacvs.bsky.social – and we hope you’ll join us there and help us to develop a thriving social space for the sector on this fast-expanding platform.
