Driving Net Zero in Cumbria: Why Industrial Decarbonisation Matters
As Head of Net Zero at Enterprising Cumbria, an Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professions (ISEP) Fellow and Society for the Environment Board Member, I’m passionate about helping our region lead the way in building a greener, stronger economy.
What We Do at Enterprising Cumbria
Enterprising Cumbria works with local businesses and communities to boost economic growth. Our work spans a wide range of activities:
- Supporting businesses to grow and innovate
- Helping people develop skills and find careers
- Working with schools to inspire future talent
- Supporting people back into work
- Driving net zero projects to reduce emissions and create sustainable growth
Each of these areas plays a vital role in building a thriving economy that works for everyone.

Our Net Zero Priorities
Within our Net Zero team, we focus on two key areas:
- Clean Energy Generation – harnessing Cumbria’s strengths including offshore wind and Cumbria’s world-leading nuclear expertise.
- Decarbonising Business and Industry – essential for our region’s advanced manufacturing sector, which is often energy-intensive.
This matters because green growth isn’t just about protecting the environment—it’s about ensuring local communities thrive.

Insights from COP30
Recently, I had the privilege of attending COP30 virtually through the Society for the Environment, joining a session on Driving Climate Action Through Industrial Decarbonization, chaired by Michael Apicelli of the Climate Club.
The discussion brought together global policymakers, steel industry leaders, and financial experts. The key message?
- Heavy industry is one of the hardest sectors to decarbonise—there are no quick wins.
- Low-emission products will become the global standard.
- Early movers will gain a competitive edge.
Why This Matters for Cumbria
With the UK’s Modern Industrial Strategy and Clean Energy Industries Sector Plan published this summer—and ambitious regional plans here in Cumbria and across the North West—the opportunity for leadership is real.
Industrial decarbonisation isn’t just about cutting emissions. It’s about building a resilient economy for future generations. Cumbria and the North West are uniquely positioned to lead this transition.
If you’re a business or community group in Cumbria, let’s work together to make this happen.

What does the Clean Energy Jobs Plan mean for green job pathways?
The Government has recently launched its Clean Energy Jobs Plan. The Plan sets out what jobs are needed to achieve the Government’s ambitions for clean energy, and promises to create 400,000 extra jobs in clean energy by 2030. These are set to be well-paid, secure jobs — many not requiring a degree — and they’re being created across the UK. But what does this mean for green career pathways?
In this blog from NPC, Head of Policy James Somerville reflects on what the new plans could mean for social mobility, and what we need to do next to make sure young people are supported into green jobs.
Job opportunity – Zero Carbon Cumbria – Administrator
Owing to an internal promotion, Futureproof Cumbria are recruiting for a highly organised administrator to support the Zero Carbon Cumbria Partnership.
This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to Cumbria’s journey towards a zero carbon future.
