NCVO boss apologises for ‘uncertainty and confusion’ over staff changes

NCVO chief executive Kate Lee has apologised to the umbrella body’s members over “uncertainty and confusion” caused by recent staff changes.

In March, some in the sector criticised NCVO’s advertisements for six new associate director positions, following the organisation’s recent cuts to other roles, including in its practical support team.

Concerns were raised over NCVO’s support for smaller charities after the restructure and the membership body’s description of itself as “small but mighty”, despite being a larger organisation than most in the sector.

MPs reject smaller charities’ exemption from pension salary sacrifice changes

MPs have voted against amendments to a bill that would have exempted smaller charities and social enterprises from upcoming changes to salary sacrifice for pension contributions.

At the November autumn budget, chancellor Rachel Reeves announced that the government would introduce a £2,000 cap on salary sacrifice into a pension from April 2029.

In a House of Commons debate last week, shadow economic secretary Mark Garnier said the changes would add “even more cost to the 290,000 businesses and charities that use it”.

Who decides what ‘good’ involvement looks like?

Increasingly, involvement has become an expectation rather than an exception. Commissioners ask for it, strategies promise it and audits report on it. Yet a fundamental question often remains unexamined: who decides what “good” involvement actually looks like?

In this guest blog for UK Evaluation Society, Andy Meakin, Director of Expert Citizens CIC, reflects on how involvement has become an expectation rather than an exception, embedded in commissioning, strategy, and audit processes.

Stop filing your strategy away

Strategy has become just another item on the ever-growing to-do list of voluntary sector managers. Too often, it feels like a ritual rather than a useful activity, and every few years, leaders begin speaking in a new language of visions, missions and competitive analysis.

In this article for DSC, Alan Lawrie argues that strategy in voluntary organisations should be a meaningful leadership process that clarifies purpose, priorities and impact, helping organisations make confident choices and focus scarce resources effectively in an uncertain environment.

The public’s understanding and perception of trustees – new research finds few people would consider trusteeship

Trustees govern charities and are accountable for their direction – yet for most people, they remain almost invisible. Understanding what the public knows and feels about trusteeship matters, not least for efforts to recruit more diverse boards. A recent survey of 1,000 nationally representative UK adults conducted by market research agency nfpResearch, found that only 6% of people would definitely consider becoming a trustee.

The overall picture appears to be one of goodwill without engagement. The public views trustees warmly but knows little about them, underestimates how many it knows personally, and has limited appetite to become one.
