Ctrl+Alt+Defend: What are trustees’ responsibilities in relation to AI and cyber risk?

Wednesday 29th July, online. Artificial intelligence (AI) and cyber threats are rapidly reshaping how charities think about risk. From AI-enabled fraud and increasingly sophisticated phishing attacks to data breaches and operational disruption, trustees are facing growing expectations to ensure their organisations are resilient in an increasingly digital environment.

Alongside these risks, trustees must also consider their governance responsibilities. This involves, balancing oversight, delegation and accountability, while ensuring appropriate safeguards are in place to protect their organisation’s people, data and assets. The potential consequences of getting this wrong can be significant, including financial loss, reputational damage and regulatory scrutiny.

This session is designed for charity trustees and senior leaders, including those with responsibility for finance, governance or risk. It is aimed at people who are seeking clear, practical guidance to support effective oversight of AI and cyber risk—without unnecessary technical complexity.

[NEW] Charity bodies welcome Lisa Nandy staying in Burnham reshuffle

Charity sector bodies have welcomed the continuity of culture secretary Lisa Nandy remaining in her role as part of new prime minister Andy Burnham’s cabinet reshuffle.

Jane Ide, chief executive of ACEVO, said: “We welcome the stability that comes with Lisa Nandy remaining as secretary of state at DCMS. At a time when the country needs long-term solutions to deep-rooted challenges, continuity matters.”

In November 2024, when speaking at Locality’s annual conference in Manchester, then-mayor Andy Burnham was asked by a member of the audience during a Q+A session when he would be standing for the role of prime minister.

Calls for charity-specific guidance on transgender inclusion after EHRC’s updated code’s parliamentary scrutiny period ends

Third Sector Against Transphobia have published their analysis of the revised EHRC Code of Practice for Services, after a 40-day parliamentary scrutiny of the updated code of practice ended recently.

The EHRC’s updated Code of Practice provides guidance on implementing the Equality Act 2010 after this April’s Supreme Court ruling defined sex as biological sex, and it has sparked significant controversy and opposition over the implications and potential exclusions of transgender and intersex persons.

For many charities, community organisations and voluntary groups, the publication of the revised Code has created uncertainty. Trustees, CEOs and staff are asking difficult questions about what it means for their work, their beneficiaries and their legal responsibilities, and campaigners have reiterated calls for the Charity Commission to issue sector specific guidance on the Code for charities and groups.

How much should a charity hold in reserves?

Few topics generate more debate in the charity sector than funds in your reserves.

Hold too little and people accuse you of poor financial planning, but hold too much and someone will inevitably ask why you’re sitting on money instead of spending it on your charitable objectives. So how much should a charity actually hold in reserves?

This new blog from Third Sector Network looks at what charities should be asking when setting their reserves policy.

Government seeks expressions of interest to join new Impact Economy Advisory Council

The Government is seeking expressions of interest for members of a new external advisory group on the impact economy, named the Impact Economy Advisory Council, which will meet quarterly in the Cabinet Office from Autumn.

In a notice published by the Cabinet Office, the impact economy ecosystem is described as “a substantial and growing contributor to the UK economy that is already delivering significant social and environmental benefits against the government’s top domestic priorities. It is imperative that this government works more strategically and effectively with the impact economy, so that every pound of public funding works harder to greater private and public impact capital and resources in support of national renewal.”

Representatives are sought with experience from across the full breadth of the impact economy. This could range from grassroots organisations to financial institutions, across the voluntary and charity sector, trusts and foundations, or purpose driven businesses of any size.

Investing in new technology can be challenging for charities, particularly when budgets are tight and demand for services continues to grow. According to the 2025 Charity Digital Skills Report, limited finances and difficulty securing funding remain key barriers to digital progress.

With resources stretched, every technology investment must demonstrate clear value. Charities need to show how new tools will improve efficiency, strengthen services, and increase impact while securing buy-in from leaders and funders.

Charities urged to help reform VAT rules on social media advertising

“Charities are increasingly operating in a digital first world, and social media is often one of the most effective ways to reach vulnerable people, engage supporters and raise awareness of important issues,” said Luke Hall, chief executive of CTG.
