Share your views: Covenant to improve the relationship between civil society and government

The National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) are working closely with national the government and ACEVO (the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations) to develop a Civil Society Covenant.

The Covenant is a new agreement to improve the relationship between civil society and government.

Following the development of a Voluntary Sector Manifesto earlier this year, draft principles were developed that will define a new two-way relationship, which is vital to ensure organisations like yours can achieve your mission. Once finalised, these principles will form the Civil Society Covenant.

The Covenant will:

  • support collaboration between civil society organisations and government
  • ensure respect for the different roles we play, and protect our independence
  • support all public bodies and civil society organisations
  • build on and support existing agreements in place at a local level
  • complement other arrangements in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Your views and thoughts are needed on the draft principles – whether you’ve had a positive or negative experience of engaging with local or national government. This is a great opportunity for Cumbrian voices to influence the national Covenant, which can help to remove some of the barriers that often stall local community action.

We’ll also be exploring Community Power on 27 November in Penrith at our AGM with a difference: Powered by Communities. We will be discussing with you how might we work together and support one another, as people who care about Cumbria, to build on what’s good and create sustainable futures. Bring your personal insight and experience to the discussions and help us have an open conversation on Community Power, sharing ideas and discovering what is important to each of us.
