Social media – working for you

Continuing with the theme of the new year and new opportunities, it seems an opportune time to mention social media and the impact it can have on your organisation.  Here at Cumbria CVS we decided to increase our social media presence and as a result have noticed increased engagement with our members, stakeholders and clients through our social media platforms – mainly Facebook and Twitter as this is where most of our customers are.

Remember that you don’t have to be an expert in social media to get involved, but you do need access to platforms such as Facebook and Twitter and a willingness to learn and engage. Choose one platform to start with, become a regular user and watch your engagement rise using the tips below.

Three Top Tips to increase engagement and brand awareness:

  1. Post regularly on your page; just a couple of quality images or an engaging status is enough. Being active and having a regular presence on your chosen platform (where a majority of your service users are hanging out) is key to the success of your social media management. You can consider scheduling your posts for the week or even the month ahead – if that helps – and there are platforms available for this.
  2. Share stories. Tell people how your organisation benefits its users. Add a short story, a 2-minute video (perhaps from an interview or an event) or an image and then share widely. Engaging people’s emotions will help increase your presence online.
  3. Use hashtag days. Days of the year are fantastic to create content and engagement (see examples below) so use them to your advantage and get your organisation known to the wider worldwide online. There are many dates throughout the year, which you can relate to – simply find or create an image suitable to post on social media.

Here are a couple of hashtag days and content ideas that could be used in February:

Wednesday 14 Feb: Valentine’s Day #valentinesday
Simply tell your followers how much you love and appreciate their support.

Saturday 17 Feb: Random Acts of Kindness Day #randomactsofkindenessday
Highlight your appreciation for your staff, volunteers, trustees and/or to encourage/recognise community spirit

Monday 19 Feb: Student Volunteering Week #studenvolunteeringweek
This is a great opportunity for you to share details about your services, asking for students to get involved.
Remember: they will be looking to develop their skills for the future, enhance their CV or University application.
