Building Better Opportunities: Getting Cumbria to Work

Celebration event
On Wednesday 22 January 2020, we held our first BBO GCtW Celebration Event (Afternoon Tea) for our participants to help recognise their journeys and their achievements. Eleven particpants attended this special event and were presented with certificates by Inspector Jim Bailey. It was a very fruitful event and feedback included from participants included:
“It was good to have got some recognition for being a part of the BBO project and also helps with confidence and connection to other opportunities”
“it had given me confidence again” and “very nice to be invited and your contribution being recognised”.

Project update
So far, 310 participants have signed up to the project and we have seen 26 participants successfully go back into education or training, 64 participants gain meaningful employment, and 11 people move from economically inactive to job searching.

We have some further exciting activities planned for participants from Gong Bath meditations and conflict resolution to Alpaca Walking – all of which will help develop transferable skills  – such as working as a team  – to aid particpants achieve their future goals. Quotes we have had to date include: “I learned that we are still important” and “I feel more self-confident” – and these highlight how these individuals have benefitted from involvment in the project.
As a partnership, BBO GCtW looks forward to continuing to work together to help our participants achieve the best result they can.

We have also re-launched the BBO GCtW facebook page and hope you will all follow us and keep abreast of BBO GCtW dvelopments and activities:

Getting Cumbria to Work: Barrow and South Lakeland (GCtW) is a Building Better Opportunities (BBO) project that serves the local authority areas of South Lakeland and Barrow. This programme is funded by the National Lottery Community Fund and the European Social Fund (ESF) who are co-investing in local projects tackling the root causes of worklessness, promoting social inclusion and driving local jobs and growth. It is one of three projects in Cumbria being funded by the European Social Fund and the National Lottery, through the National Lottery Community Fund and is led by Cumbria CVS.

BBO GCtW aims to support and work with individuals who are facing multiple and complex barriers to employment and who are furthest removed from the labour market. It will help them to move towards and into employment by supporting them to play a greater, more productive role in their communities, demonstrate increased skills and confidence and be much more likely to consider employment or volunteering as a viable prospect.
