Learn how to let your listening make a difference

The small gesture of listening can make a massive difference in someone’s life.

Letting people talk can turn a life around. So often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around – Leo Buscagllia

Tuesday 4 February & Tuesday 11 February 6.30 – 8.30pm.

BID drop-in sessions

Suitable for Hard of Hearing, Deaf, Deafened, or Dual sensory loss people, who need some information about our service but cannot use the telephone. Those people might come along to use your service regularly and perhaps you do not know how to refer them to specialised Deaf equipment (i.e. TV loops, Flashing doorbells, Deaf smoke alarms, or how to apply for Benefits, for new Housing, How to refer themselves to the council without your support) without getting burdened with a phone call or email.

The drop-in sessions are also useful for information gathering, if a service user need to know more details, pick up a leaflet or to self-refer themselves into our service. We are also happy to see people in person to discuss their concerns and see how we can help them.

They will be held monthly in different parts of Cumbria to allow accessibility, and our staff also has BSL qualifications.

Barnardo’s Boloh Helpline is pleased to announce the expansion of our service to support the mental health and wellbeing of adult asylum seekers across the UK. This project is funded by the Home Office and is in addition to our current service that offers support to children, young people and their parents.

We welcome referrals from professionals via our referral form, as well as direct contact from asylum seekers by telephone, email or online chat.

The Helpline is open Monday – Friday (10am-8pm) and Saturday (10-3pm) via phone, webchat and email.

Please contact boloh.helpline@barnardos.org.uk further information about this project.

Expression of interest and partnership request for upcoming Ministry of Justice tenders

The Ministry of Justice will shortly be procuring services in the North West (covering NPS regions Cheshire, Merseyside, Lancashire and Cumbria) to provide advocacy and support to offenders in relation to finances, benefits, and debt. The service will provide signposting, guidance, and advocacy and suppliers do not need to have FCA/FSA regulation.

St Giles Wise is a Third Sector organisation looking for partners in all four regions. In particular, we’re looking for small charities who would like to do more with the Ministry of Justice / National Probation Service but have so far not qualified onto the MOJ’s Dynamic Purchasing Framework.

Winter Warmth Appeal supported by victims of Storm Arwen

When Storm Arwen hit Cumbria on 25th November, more than 118,000 homes were left without power. Hundreds were still without power a week later.

Network provider Electricity North West has committed to compensating customers who’ve been without power. Cumbria Community Foundation, which runs the annual Winter Warmth Appeal, has been approached by people who want to donate their compensation to those who struggle to keep warm.

Over the last five years, an average of 300 people have died in Cumbria from cold-related illnesses, the majority over 60, because they cannot afford to keep their heating on.

NCVO: What can we learn from England’s volunteering policy response to Covid-19?

NCVO has published their research on the volunteering policy response to the covid-19 pandemic in England. This research explored the experiences of those working with volunteers during the pandemic, and is part of a larger cross-UK study. This blog shares the key messages and findings.

New research shows how the voluntary sector tackled inequality and isolation during the pandemic

The findings of a project helping to bring communities together to tackle inequality and isolation during the Covid-19 pandemic have been shared by Leeds Beckett University (LBU) and Locality.

The report gives an insight into how organisations adapted to the pandemic. It demonstrates how they focused more on creating virtual spaces, reaching out to vulnerable and isolated people, and co-ordinating support to communities.

Safeguarding for charities and trustees

The Charity Commission has recently updated its guidance on safeguarding at voluntary sector organisations. Find out about your responsibilities to keep everyone who comes into contact with your charity safe from harm: this includes volunteers, staff and beneficiaries.

Thinking of returning to your role as a healthcare professional?

This message goes out to all members of the local community who may once have been a healthcare professional such as a nurse or midwife and are now considering a return. Returning healthcare professionals have a key role to play in ensuring patients and service users have access to experienced and well-trained care staff equipped with the right skills.
