Tackling gambling-related harm

Beacon Counselling Trust offers free treatment and support to those affected by problematic gambling.

Supporting mums at risk of child removal

The Motherwell Charity is a Womens and Girls mental health charity, and their Believe project supports mums at risk of child removal, by offering one to one support through the Believe toolkit.

For the last 4 years they have been getting requests to expand the Believe project into other areas, so have launched the Believe Ambassador programme, to train others to use the toolkit and offer the support to mums that need it most.

A series of information webinars help explain what is involved in the training, and dates can be found on the website.


Free Community Energy Ambassador courses

It has been tough this winter with many households struggling with all the energy price rises and more price increases are expected from the 1st April. Yorkshire Energy Doctor CIC will equip you to be able to advise local residents on ways to reduce their energy costs, explain the current energy crisis, energy bills and energy suppliers, and provide loads of useful information on the schemes available to help others to be safe, warm and well over the winter.

The next dates are:

Course starting Thurs 3 Feb, 10 – 11.30am.
Course starting Mon 7 March, 2 – 3.30pm.

Playlist for Life – playlist maker session

Playlist for Life logoJoin us for this FREE short memory melodies session. Introducing Playlist for Life, the music and dementia charity. Using our free resources, we will show you how you can put together a personal playlist, which can help people living with dementia.

Free Arts project for young adults with learning disabilities and/or autism

Taking place in Carlisle from February to April 2022, ‘A Picture of Me’ is a creative exploration of self.

Find your voice and discover your own story in this new and exciting 8 week programme. Working with specialist artists, you’ll learn how to uncover your own story in a series of hands on workshops. You can decide how you want your story to be to be told by exploring either dance & film or street art. The pieces created will then be shared with the public either in-person or virtually.

Leader to Leader bursary fund for West Cumbria

The Leader-to-Leader programme is designed for existing managers of small business and third sector leaders in West Cumbria with more than 5 years of management experience, looking to develop their leadership skills and improve business performance.

The eight month programme allows a gradual, evolving approach with many opportunities to problem solve and integrate learning in a practical and business-focused way with the support of other local leaders. It also offers the opportunity to learn from other delegates within the cohort.

Friends of Carlisle Victorian and Turkish Baths

As you may be aware the Turkish baths is facing the possible threat of closure. The friends group see this as the biggest threat to it in it’s 112 year history. It’s a great, under utilised facility and described as “Carlisle’s Hidden Gem”.

Lakes Distillery makes splash with clean water scheme

Lake District Foundation logoFunding is available to community groups keen to be kind to lakes and rivers across Cumbria. Lake District Foundation has joined forces with The Lakes Distillery to launch a £25k funding pot for projects that enhance and conserve water quality.

Projects must focus on water quality in the Lake District and demonstrate that they will contribute to at least one of the following objectives: pollution prevention and mitigation, habitat creation and protection, invasive species control, species conservation or education.

NAVCA takes on Volunteer Centre Quality Accreditation

From the start of this year, NAVCA has taken on the Volunteer Centre Quality Accreditation from NCVO. This move will bring more certainty to funders, commissioners and also holders of the sought-after quality assurance mark.

Reach Out – mental health awareness event, Workington

‘Reach Out’ is a new event focussing on Health and Wellbeing, on Saturday 14 May 2022 in Vulcan Park, giving the community the knowledge that there is help out there and the tools they need to look after themselves and their families.

I am looking for businesses, charities, organisations and individuals who have something to offer in terms of health and wellbeing and mental health help, support and guidance and of course anyone who would like to get involved with the yarn bombing again!

Grants available for community arts projects

Artistic projects in parts of Cumbria are being encouraged to apply for funding to help rejuvenate the arts sector after lockdown.

The Westmorland Arts Trust, managed by Cumbria Community Foundation, supports charitable projects that benefit residents in the former county of Westmorland, giving them access to the highest quality music, drama and the visual arts.

Grants of up to £2,000 are available to offer creative and cultural activities for people, particularly young adults and children.

The Road Ahead 2022 report from NCVO

NCVO has launched the Road Ahead 2022 – its annual analysis of the biggest trends, opportunities and events that will impact charities and volunteering in the year ahead.

NCVO has identified some areas of stability as well as trends that go beyond the pandemic, to help leaders, trustees and communities make informed decisions about their futures. Some of the trends set out include: more political stability, a tighter squeeze on living costs, and a shifting role on climate change.

Bay Health and Care Partners (BHCP) want your views on digital services

BHCP have launched a project on the Let’s Talk Morecambe Bay site to give people the chance to engage about some of the digital solutions they may have experienced via services across the partnership.

The project runs until Friday 25 March. More information is available here


UoC and Safety Net Survey

Safety Net in partnership with the University of Cumbria are leading on an important piece of research that will allow anyone affected by rape, sexual abuse and exploitation to have their voices heard around what worked for them and any barriers they faced when accessing services both voluntary and statutory. The research has been commissioned by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner.

The survey is anonymous and will only take 15 minutes to complete. We really want your voices to be heard.

The online survey for service users will be open until Saturday 12th February.


Better Health Food Scanner App campaign

The Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID)’s new childhood nutrition campaign has launched – The campaign focuses on using the Food Scanner app to help families make healthier food swaps.

Children’s Healthier Eating Toolkit – supports families to make positive changes to their diet with ten fun, easy to run activities.

Comprehensive schools programme – with new curriculum-linked resources available on the School Zone, a dedicated website for teachers.


Local Government Reorganisation

The Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) Programme Board is working to create two new unitary authorities for Cumbria and is committed to keeping stakeholders informed.

The LGR website provides a wealth of information, on the background to LGR as well as the overall aims and ambitions of the changes. There is also a timeline of events, a glossary to help residents, businesses and partners understand the process and terminology.

 


Restoring Hardknott Forest

Hardknott Forest is a 630 hectare former conifer plantation in the upper reaches of the Duddon Valley, 8 miles from Broughton in Furness.

Restoring Hardknott Forest is a partnership between Forestry England and the University of Leeds. We aim to transform Hardknott Forest from a conifer plantation into one of the largest native woodlands in the Lake District National Park, for the benefit of people, nature and our climate.
