The 2015 General Election is fast approaching, meaning politicians are particularly keen to engage with voters. But should your organisation try and influence politics, or should you just “stick to your knitting” as one government minister suggested over the summer?
I am delighted to have been appointed to the position of Chair of HealthWatch Cumbria. I have greatly enjoyed working with the Board and team and I am truly committed to ensuring that HealthWatch Cumbria carries out our role as the consumer champion for those who use health and care services.
I have been a Board Member of HealthWatch Cumbria since 2013 and have experience in a number of other senior positions, including being a Non-executive Director of a Primary Care Trust and an elected County Council Member. I am currently the vice Chair of Cumbria CVS, and President of Soroptimist International in Carlisle – a global voice working to advance human rights and the status of women.
It’s terribly important that a house is built on solid ground. The same applies to your organisation – however big or small. If you don’t get the foundations right, you’ll have trouble building on to them and the walls may come tumbling down.
One of the most important building blocks to consider is also the one most of us fear most, and really don’t want to think about – Finances. This includes bookkeeping, management accounts, payroll, tax, audit – the list is endless, and if you’re anything like me you’d much rather be getting on with the day job than worrying about the minutiae of recording financial transactions. For most of us it’s not until year end, or until something starts to go wrong that we begin to look at our foundations, and wonder if they are robust enough.

What is happening?
The framework of requirements for the accounts of Charities has been a constant for the last nine years, as set out by SORP 2005. Now this is changing. Accounts prepared for years beginning on, or after 1st January 2015 must comply with the new FRS 102, or FRSSE (if appropriate).
