Millom – Flood Recovery

As many of you will have seen on the news, there was some very heavy rain in South Cumbria in September. Up to 300 homes in Millom were flooded (along with the GP Practice and some businesses), and smaller numbers of properties were affected in Haverigg and Windermere.

A Local Recovery Group – has been set up to coordinate work in Millom and support the community in its recovery. If any third sector organisations want to be involved, they should contact Gillian Elliott (Cumbria County Council’s Area Manager for Copeland) who is chairing the group –

Community Volunteers/Recovery Centre – The Millom community has been fantastic, and very effective in organising help and support for those affected during the flooding and over the few days since. A recovery centre has been set up at the Millom Pensioners Association headquarters known as the ‘Tin Chapel’ where donated goods can be dropped off and collected. Residents can also obtain information and advice or drop in for a cup of tea and chat. People can also access advice and support at the Millom Network Centre, Millom Library (including Copeland BC Council Offices) and Age UK Bradbury Centre.

Funding and Financial Support – Cumbria Community Foundation established a small Disaster Relief Fund following the floods of 2015, and people affected by the flooding are eligible to apply for grants from this; priority will be given to uninsured households with low income.
