Community Flood Recovery

* Project completed in 2021, following continuation funding *

September 2017

As many of you will have seen on the news, there was some very heavy rain in South Cumbria on Saturday 30 September 2017. Up to 300 homes in Millom were flooded (along with the GP Practice and some businesses), and smaller numbers of properties were affected in Haverigg and Windermere. Please find below a range of information and documents that may be of use to those affected.

Millom Local Recovery Group

The Millom community has been fantastic, and very effective in organising help and support for those affected during the flooding and over the few days since.

A Local Recovery Group was set up on Monday to coordinate work in Millom and support the community in its recovery. If any third sector organisations want to be involved, they should contact Gillian Elliott (Cumbria County Council’s Area Manager for Copeland) who is chairing the group – Gillian.Elliott@cumbria.gov.uk

Being on the email distribution list will mean that you receive up to date information, give you a chance to coordinate your activities with other organisations, and allow you to highlight any problems or gaps in support.

Flood Grants

Cumbria Community Foundation established a Disaster Relief Fund following the floods of 2015, and people affected by the weekend’s flooding are eligible to apply for grants from this; priority will be given to uninsured households with low income. More details are available on the CCF website: https://www.cumbriafoundation.org/fund/cumbria-disaster-relief-fund/

Flood Appeal

The Millom community have started a crowdfunding page to raise money for those affected: https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/stephen-evans-288

You can also donate to Cumbria Community Foundation’s Cumbria Disaster Fund, which  currently stands at £50,000. However, CCF are aware that the Fund, at its current level, can only provide a very small level of support to uninsured households. They are therefore keen to secure additional funding to increase the grant support available for the flooded households in Millom. Donations can be made to the Cumbria Disaster Fund via this link:  https://mydonate.bt.com/events/cumbria-disaster-fund

Information and Advice

Information on those affected is being collated in Flood Fact Sheets, the first of which are attached. If your organisation has information that you’d like to see included in future versions, please email it to Gillian Elliott: Gillian.Elliott@cumbria.gov.uk

Cumbria County Council is also publishing a lot of practical information on their website – including extended opening times for the Household Waste Recycling Centre and information on avoiding rogue traders. Keep an eye on their “latest news” section for now, and a flood page bringing it all together will be up and running soon.

Flooded Third Sector Organisations

We’re not currently aware of any community groups or third sector organisations that have been directly affected by the flooding. If you are aware of any groups whose premises have been flooded (or who have been affected in other ways) that might benefit from support from Cumbria CVS, then please contact Carolyn Otley: CarolynO@cumbriacvs.org.uk

Rebuilding Together

The Big Lottery Fund has announced a £1 million package to help Cumbrian communities become more resilient. This comes in the wake of December’s devastating floods, and will help local people, communities and organisations to prepare for similar events in the future.

The ‘Rebuilding Together’ programme will take place over the next 3 years, led by Cumbria CVS and delivered in partnership with Cumbria Action for Sustainability (CAfS) and Action with Communities in Cumbria (ACT) – three local charities with a long history of working together to support Cumbrian communities and organisations. The programme started in October 2016.
