North West Ambulance Service
During our community engagement events last summer, one feedback theme that we received was how we can provide accessible services to our patients and the public,  We would like to share with you some of the ways that North West Ambulance Service provides support to our deaf and hard of hearing communities.  All of the services listed below are free of charge to use:

Using our 999 Emergency SMS Service

  • The Emergency SMS service lets deaf, hard of hearing and speech-impaired people in the UK send a SMS text message to the UK 999 service where it will be passed to the police, ambulance, fire rescue, or coastguard. You need to register before you can use it. All information on how to register for the service can either be found on the attached poster or the following link:
Click here to download the Emergency SMS leaflet (it is also attached to this email) or you can read more here http://www.emergencysms.net/
  • Our Paramedic Emergency Service crews also carry Pictorial Communication handbooks – more information can be found on them here:
    https://www.nwas.nhs.uk/services/help/pictorial-communications

Using NHS111

  • To use NHS111, you can use InterpreterNow to connect you to an online BSL interpreter who will phone NHS111 for you. The NHS111 adviser will ask you questions to assess your symptoms and then decide what to do next, depending on the severity of your health problem. This could be: giving you self-care advice, or direct you to the local service that helps you best, or if your health problem is urgent, they will send an ambulance for you.
  • To access InterpreterNow, you can either use the internet: https://interpreternow.co.uk/nhs111 (suitable with computers, tablets or phones) or through the InterpreterNow app (suitable for either Android or iOS) but to use the App you need to register it beforehand through here: www.interpreternow.co.uk/reg.  It is recommended that you do this before you may need to use it.

Joe Wicks profits to go to NHS
Fitness coach Joe Wicks has said he is donating “every single penny” of the money made by his online PE sessions to the NHS.
Wicks’s YouTube channel, The Body Coach TV, has live fitness sessions every day at 9am, aimed at children in a bid to help them stay active while the UK is in lockdown and schools are closed.
In a post shared on Instagram, Wicks said the popularity of his videos had increased his advertising revenue “unlike anything I’ve seen or experienced on my channel before”.
He said: “So I’ve decided that as long as I’m the nation’s PE teacher, every single penny of the money generated on these videos is going to the place where we need it the most right now. All of it is going straight to the NHS, to support the real heroes right now.”

Giving World: Free Resource for people you support
Giving World is a registered charity. We redirect new business end-of-line and discontinued stock (e.g. warm clothing, food, toiletries) for free to the most deprived communities in the UK. Our evidence indicates charities across the UK are struggling to meet the increasing level of need in their communities.  And that beneficiaries face multiple and complex problems. Amongst the highest are loneliness, unemployment, low income, homelessness, and mental health needs. With the removal of institutional safety nets there is now a greater need than ever to draw people in to safety.

You can help your clients and beneficiaries by registering with Giving World and accessing free resources for people you help and your charity. Our partner charities tell us that the goods help to:

·         Extend services – The goods provided by Giving World enable charities to diversify their approach and meet the needs of their local communities.

·         Reach more people – Life essential goods are a unique source of recruitment for the hard to reach, drawing in those in need who are not actively seeking support e.g. those suffering with addiction

·         Increase charity capacity – Increased reach and awareness of the charity can attract more volunteers and funding.  Many beneficiaries go on to give back by volunteering themselves.

To access free goods register at www.givingworld.org.uk or you can contact Louise on 0116 251 6051

Charity annual returns: print before you submit!
The Charity Commission is no longer providing copies of annual returns once they have been submitted online.

Charities are being advised to print their returns in draft form before submitting them, as you will not receive a PDF of the final version as you may have done in previous years. Once submitted, there is no way to retrieve the information so it is important that you remember to print your return in draft format before you have pressed ‘submit’.

This useful information was circulated by Sandy Adirondack in her free legal update email service for voluntary organisations, which you can sign up for by emailing legalupdate@sandy-a.co.uk with your contact details. You can find out more about this useful service here.
